Before launching Cultivating Visions, Kamelya spent more than 16 years as a senior health communication specialist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During her federal career, she supported national public health campaigns and helped guide communications during major emergencies, including Zika, hurricanes and the COVID-19 pandemic. Her work translated complex and rapidly changing information into clear, actionable messages that reached millions of people.

She also trained hundreds of federal, state and local responders in crisis and emergency risk communication, coached communicators in plain language and contributed to agency-wide communication standards as a member of the CDC Style Guide Workgroup. Her leadership helped strengthen how public health information was developed and delivered during both everyday and high-stakes moments.

Today, through Cultivating Visions, Kamelya serves as a trusted communications advisor to leaders, athletes, coaches, political candidates and mission-driven organizations. She helps clients shape their stories, strengthen their public messages, navigate transitions and approach high-visibility moments with clarity and confidence. Her work includes strategic messaging, leadership communications, crisis communication, brand development and thought leadership positioning.

Beyond her consulting work, Kamelya is the founder and executive director of the Ancestors Dream Initiative, an independent nonprofit supporting Black student organizations, cultural programs and spaces of belonging at the University of Florida. Under her leadership, the organization has mobilized alumni and donors to help preserve the programs and traditions that keep students connected, supported and seen.
